Personal Development Finding Out What youre Good At What are you good at? If youre anything like me, its easy to talk about what youve done or what you know, but genuinely working out what you are good at is pretty hard. Im not sure if its a British attitude that naturally prefers self-deprecating but Im pretty sure a lot of it comes from the fact that ability can be a bit hard to get hold of us a concept. The big problem with this is that to successfully manage your career, knowing what youre good at is vital. Firstly, if you dont have a clear idea about what to do with your future, your abilities can be as good a place as any to start. This is what I found leaving uni with a History degree under my belt. I didnt have a profession I particularly wanted to go into; nor did I have something I believed in that I wanted to get behind, but I did have something I thought I was good at researching stuff. Secondly, to put it simply, employers want to hire people who can do what they want and in a packed field theyre going to go for the people who can convince them they are best at what they want them to do. Its one thing knowing what good communication is, but are you good at it, and could you persuade a prospective employer that youre good at it? I reckon one way to come up with this sort of information about yourself is to think about what you have been good at in the past. Real life evidence gives us confidence in our opinions about ourselves and makes it easier to persuade a recruiter. This idea underpins a little exercise I use called an SKA story.   It comes in two parts. Firstly, write down five occasions when you achieved something youre proud of, or were particularly excited about achieving at the time. Of the five, its a good idea to pick at least one example which is extra-curricular, at least one from work/study and one which is at least five years old. It probably works best if you write each occasion on a separate piece of paper, add a short description of the event, if you want. Secondly, you need to work out how you achieved this. The learning theorist Benjamin Bloom came up with three different types of learning. We can use these to pinpoint what you used to achieve your successes. Blooms three types of learning are SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE and ATTITUDES. These can be defined as follows: SKILLS: These are the abilities we need to perform a task, e.g.: to pass a driving test, you need good observation skills, anticipation, judgement, reactions, etc. KNOWLEDGE: This is the knowledge that was needed to complete the task, e.g.: to pass a driving test you need to know how a car operates and about the highway code. ATTITUDES: This is to do with having the emotional and personal facets to do something, e.g.: passing a diving test requires perseverance to learn and calmness in the actual test. For each of your examples try and list at least three things in each of these categories. Doing this across five examples should begin to build up repeated patterns of what you have used to accomplish your achievements in the past. You should see repeated attributes that you used repeatedly. It may also show you how youve developed these facets. Working through this builds up a bigger picture of who you are, and what you are good at. This bigger picture can be useful for yourself knowing how you want to develop towards your goals, when writing an application, or in an interview. I find a lot of graduates are stronger on what they know about the outside world of work and the knowledge they have gained from their course, but weaker on what they know about themselves. Entrepreneurs must always be willing to look at new possibilities, take calculated risk and maintain a commitment to education. This is the only way you will advance your business. Varied viewpoints The second part of keeping an open mind is to allow varied viewpoints into your life. So many are fearful of moving beyond what they currently know that their world eventually moves backwards rather than forwards because they refuse to stay abreast. Whoever allows this to be the case will also have a difficult time communicating with people of different generations. You might ask, “Does this really matter?” Should you be young, it’s important to know how to communicate well with those older than you, and the the opposite advice is true for older people. You do want to know what the other is doing in that it gives you increased talking points in common as well as potential opportunity. Learn from others always Learning from others applies to groups you attend too. While you may be loyal to particular online groups or in-person networking groups, quarterly you should visit another to find their thinking on your area or related areas of expertise. Doing so will broaden your horizon and provide new ideas for products and services. Recently, I did something quite different from anything I had done before. I attended an inspirational program hosted by the Brahma Kumari. It lived up to how it was promoted. One of the speakers was a several time gold medal Olympian, not someone you meet every day. I also met people from many walks of life including a woman who, with her husband, established the first recycling company in San Francisco. Each person I met had a very unique story to tell. Had I not ventured into this new realm, I would never have had the opportunity to meet and speak with them. At a recent dinner party, the opposite proved to be true. I heard a guest describe in great detail how she trains horses. She even shared some of the inherent differences in behavior between the male and female horses. Another guest was annoyed that a new subject was brought to discussion. He prefers the same conversation each time with which he already has familiarity. Some business people behave in a similar manner. They refuse to believe business may be conducted online and try to convince others the traditional ways are the best. Harness the power of styles I do not believe the question is which style may be the best, but rather it is important to be aware of how to utilize all styles so that you may communicate with all age levels and types of people. It’s similar to offering your products for all types of learning styles such as presenting them in formats for video, PDF documents, mp3, ebook and hard copy. Each person has a personal preference and this way you increase the potential to sell to more people. The bottom line is, the more ways in which you communicate with others, openness to subject matter, and the multiple ways in which you present your information will serve to increase your brand awareness, audiences, and ultimately your sales. Networking just to Network does NOT make Sense - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Why do you show up for social events? Peer pressure, because your boss or friend told you to, or just because there was an event. If you answered yes to any of these you may be doing it wrong. Networking for the sake of networking does not make sense. Going to events is fine, but you should know why you are there. You should have a plan and have a rough idea for how you plan on using your limited time. Sure, this is common sense and is Networking 101. However. I see far too many people just show up and hope that something good will happen. Social Media Plays a Role If you are attending events that are within your industry you should be using Social Media to find out who else is going. You should be using Social Media before, during and after the event to insure you know who will be there (or at least have an idea) and that you know what you will say to them when you get your 30-60 second window of opportunity. You might say … He’s crazy … that never happens. Well, the reality is … it happens all the time. Perhaps just not to you. What about events that are generic or not in your industry? To me that’s ok. It’s nice to explore areas outside your specialty and/or engage within a common cause that a more general Social Media event might attract. What is the point of Social Media? Is this an indictment on the state of Social Media and events ? Absolutely not. Quite the contrary. Social Media has made learning about events almost frictionless. You can find out about events happening in your region within a few mouse clicks. You can also find out about events happening wherever you happen to be. For example, if you are attending a trade show (which is, of course, a type of Social Media Networking) you can find out very quickly if there is a meetup happening at the show. No longer do you have to hope and wait someone will tell you where to meet. Now your local search can do that work for you. Network Right As I said at the start of this post… Networking for the sake of Networking does NOT make sense. Know the WHY, Have a plan, and Execute. Make sure you know WHY you are attending events. Make sure you HAVE a plan for attending each and every event. There is not enough time to attend every event. Be picky. Your peers will appreciate your discretion. Is this too mercurial and calculating? Perhaps, but if you are like most people you don’t have unlimited time. Determine where you can most effectively spend your most valuable resource… your time. Then as you figure this out make sure you maximize your time and execute your plan. When you do these consistently you will develop a plan of action and a rubric for getting the most out of your networking engagements and opportunities. You will develop your own style because it will be a style that works for you. Which means you’ll be able to keep it up over the long haul. As you  find ways that work for your style of networking you will likely encounter similarly minded individuals and also those that think completely differently than you do. When you find both of these types of people… embrace them… through our differences we can evaluate ideas and methods to  do more together. When you are able to do this on a consistent basis you will stand out in your career. Not as a career “networker” rather as a successful networker that utilizes networking effectively and efficiently to get more done. At the end of it  all that should be the  goal. And, when you develop deep friendships as a result that’s much more than a side benefit. In fact, that might be the ultimate benefit. Networking when done right can make a lot of sense. Have a plan and execute wisely.

When should I apply for graduate jobs We can all feel it, the inevitable march of time as summer draws to a close and September looms before us once again. The autumn marks the start of a new term, the start of the graduate recruitment season, and the start of a time when it will no longer be acceptable to binge watch Netflix for seven hours a day. You might have that constant feeling of panic in your stomach. When do I need to apply for graduate jobs? Should I start now? Will I have time when term begins? Well we’re here to tell you firstly, not to stress, and secondly this is exactly everything you need to know to make sure you don’t miss those all important application deadlines. The sooner the better Ok, so I know we said there’s no reason to panic, but the sooner you start researching graduate jobs and schemes the better.  You need to get in the habit of researching new opportunities on a regular basis, and setting aside time every week to work on applications; getting this routine down can take a little while so its best to get going as soon as possible. Some graduate schemes do have really early deadlines, especially the more competitive ones. Companies are keen to recruit the most dedicated and organised candidates who they know will be job hunting early on, so if you want to be in with a chance of grabbing those golden opportunities, make sure you’re prepared. It could be a whole other 12 months before some of these roles come around again, so make sure you dont miss out. Graduate jobs are different to graduate schemes This is a crucial bit of information that you really need to know heading into the graduate recruitment market. Graduate schemes are set programmes put in place by employers to train up recent graduates in preparation for a full time job. They could involve moving around different departments or completing some kind of qualification alongside working. Applications for graduate schemes tend to open in September, for start dates of the following August or September. These schemes are specifically for graduates, so employers are keen to get the cream of the crop from final year students. Graduate jobs are slightly different.  They are, like it says on the tin, jobs where youll start working immediately, and applications are open all year round. That being said, peak times for graduate jobs do tend to fall around September/October, and May/June time, so make sure you keep your eyes peeled throughout the year, and don’t leave it to the last minute. Also make sure you dont fall into the trap of applying for graduate jobs with start dates in a few months time (before youve graduated). Although some may have delayed start dates, many may be looking for people to start pretty much immediately, so watch out if youre still in final year. Be tactical The most effective way of completing job applications is focusing on quality over quantity. Yes, you could sit and wait for September 1st and then apply for every opportunity that becomes available. Or you could be tactical about it and choose the roles you’re most passionate about, schedule their deadlines into your calendar and focus on those. You won’t physically have enough time to apply for every job under the sun, and if you try you’ll do a pretty shoddy job, so be tactical and pick the jobs you genuinely really want. If you work hard on getting your enthusiasm across in the application, you’re more likely to secure an interview. Beware of the lengthy application process This is both a warning and a word of hope. Often graduate schemes that open applications in September won’t invite successful candidates for interview until December/January time, and there’s no guarantee you’ll receive any form of communication before then. Companies receive thousands of applications and it can take a substantial amount of time to sort through them all. Therefore, remember not to rush into accepting a job offer you’re not 100% happy with if you’re still waiting on other applications, and don’t lose hope if you haven’t heard anything in a while. Remember to work around your studies Applying for graduate jobs and schemes in September isnt only important to grab those most sought after places, but it’ll help you balance job applications with studying most effectively. By mid-October, essay deadlines will start coming thick and fast, and in December you’ll have to start thinking about revising for those January exams, so getting time consuming applications done and dusted in September will be a massive weight off your shoulders. While applying for jobs is super important, try not to let it hamper your studies too much. Job opportunities will come round again, but you’ll never get another chance to secure that all important 2:1, so make sure to juggle your time effectively.
